Defence contractor Elbit Systems reported a rise in quarterly earnings on Wednesday, boosted by higher sales and a capital gain from the sale of a subsidiary. Israel's largest publicly traded defence firm recorded a net profit of $105.3 million, or $2.48 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter, compared with net income of $31.9 million, or 75 cents a share, a year earlier.

The withdrawal of British combat troops from Iraq has already begun and by 31 July 2009 the vast bulk of British Armed Forces will have all left the country. Except that is, a small group of Royal Naval personnel. The naval personnel will be staying in southern Iraq to train the fledgling Iraqi Navy.
